The Slowdown Letters

What actually changed when I started sleeping properly

Welcome to The Magnetic Woman series.

This is the paid series inside The Slowdown Letters where I go places the free letters don’t. The functional doctor appointments, the exact supplement protocols, the spiritual practices, the inner work, the financial decisions, the rituals that nobody talks about in wellness spaces but that actually changed my life.

This is your front-row seat to the real version. Not the curated slow-life aesthetic. The actual work of becoming a woman who draws everything she wants toward her, without draining herself for it.

It started slowly. One bad night here, another bad night there. I mentioned it to my colleagues, but I honestly thought that was just what life was. I was chasing a new job while still juggling consultancy work, three or four projects at a time. A relative had passed away, with no one but me to handle all the administrative work around a death. And I was travelling every couple of months. It was fine at first. I’ll just catch up on sleep another night - that’s what I kept telling myself. But then that other night never quite came.

I was hunting for a new job, and as a UX designer, our portfolios have to be a 10 out of 10, except we can rarely show our real projects, because they’re mostly secret until they go live. So I built my own project, redesigning an in-store shopping experience through a mobile app. This was the beginning of 2023. I stayed up most nights, crunch time I called it, locked in on a new goal. But the morning after, my actual job still needed doing, the gym still needed hitting, all while eating as little as possible, because no matter how thin I was, I always thought I could lose a few more kilos. That’s another story, and one day I’ll write you the whole thing about the fifteen years it took to come out the other side of that.

A few months later I started a gut protocol that was going to heal everything. I wrote a full post on that one here.

My body was keeping score

My hair started falling out. My acne got worse than it had ever been. The headaches came more and more often, until they were daily. I started having a hard time even seeing the cars driving past my house, because the movement was too much. Music became hard to listen to. TV was too much. The diet I was on was punishing, and I spent most of my days in the kitchen.

But the nights were what I feared the most. How many hours would it take me to fall asleep tonight? Looking back through my old journals, some nights it was up to six hours. Or I’d finally drop off with more melatonin than I should have in me, only to jolt awake at 2 or 3am and lie there for another three hours, knowing I had to be up for work at 7. I cooled the room. I took my mattress down onto the floor. I counted sheep. Checked the clock. Got up to eat, maybe that would help. Nothing. I was desperate, and scared, and my brain was completely fried every single day.

The headaches kept getting more intense. In meetings, I didn’t hear a single word. I couldn’t even look at my colleagues on Teams if there were more than two of us, all that movement on the screen, my brain just could not register it. The dishes sat in the sink most days. I simply couldn’t.

The moment I realised sleep was the thread

It was only two years later, when I finally started sleeping properly again, that I understood what sleep had actually been doing, or not doing, for me. A full night, every night, didn't just settle my gut, grow my hair back and clear my skin. It changed my mood. One bad night could still knock me sideways, but sleeping well, I became calmer, wiser, sharper. The brain I had been longing for through my whole burnout, it was coming back. And I thought it made complete sense that when I finally sat in front of my functional doctor back in 2024, the very first thing she went for wasn't my gut, or my hormones. It was my sleep.

What changed first, and how fast

The first thing I noticed was my headaches lifting, somewhere around a few weeks in, and honestly, that was everything to me, because they had been my daily torment. My skin took longer, somewhere around six months to a year to really clear. And my hair was the slowest of all, the better part of a year before it filled back in at the top. But the bigger surprise was, I never imagined my skin could glow like this, could be this clear, simply from sleeping well.

This wasn’t one magic thing that fixed everything. I had a whole protocol for far more than sleep. But sleep was the thread that trickled down into all the rest, and sleep is something you can build from home.

If you want to know exactly what I changed, in what order, and why the sequence matters as much as the protocol itself, that’s what comes next.

Behind the paywall in this post of The Magnetic Woman:

  • The meditations that can change your subconscious wiring around your health.

  • The exact three supplements my functional doctor started me on, before a single lab result came back.

  • The hormone additions that came next, and why sleep had to come first.

  • The daily nervous system rhythm I still keep three years on.

  • What I think finally settled my cycle back to 28 days.

  • The before and after of my skin, 3 years ago vs today.

  • The five things I’d tell any woman to start with, whatever her results say.
